Co-products
What are co-products?
In the corn wet milling process to extract the starch, all the constituents of the corn grain are separated, obtaining, in addition to the starch, the protein fraction, the germ, the fibre and also soaking water.
These products are mainly used as raw materials for animal feed, which are highly sought after due to their high content of crude protein, fibre and fat.
The characteristics of these products, which are beneficial for animals, make them used as ingredients in the production of feed for livestock, poultry, marine animals, etc.

Protein
(Corn gluten meal)
The protein has excellent amino acid digestibility and a low ash content. It is extracted from corn by wet milling. It has a yellow-orange color and floury consistency. It is rich in energy amino acids, methionine and cysteine.
Protein applications:
- Food compounds as bypass protein for cattle
- Pet food: quality proteins for pets
- Food for young animals, such as piglets, thanks to its very high nutritional value

- Pigment in bird feeding, contributing to accentuate the yellow color of the yolks
Corn Germ
(Corn Germ)
Corn Gem is a product with the appearance of small yellow seeds. It is obtained by separating the grain in the corn wet milling process. It is highly appreciated especially in animal feed, due to its high-fat content. It is also used for the production of edible oils.
Corn germ applications:
- Food for swine and poultry, due to digestible amino acids
- Feed for cattle, source of protein and high energy
- Formulas of dressings for corral birds as a supplier of grease
- Production of edible oils
Concentrated Maceration Water
(Corn Steep Liquor)
Concentrated steeping water is a dark yellow liquid obtained from the water used in the initial stage of the wet milling process (corn steeping). It is a product with high nitrogen content, in the form of amino acids and peptides, nutrients and vitamins. Given its characteristics, it has several applications including animal feed, fermentation and fertilization.
